George Town Watch House
With your See Tasmania Smartvisit Card, you will receive FREE entry to the George Town Watch House.

This 1855 building on the site of the original 1816 gaol has had many uses over later years, but was developed by the George Town Council to celebrate the town's Bicentenary in 2004. The local historical society provides local and family history resources, including the Female
Family Founders' Database of all VDL (Tasmanian) female convicts, and can assist visitors with their research in the front room. The evocative "Departures & Arrivals" room with its 'convict bonnets' near the original cells, continues the story of the George Town and other female factories.

Interpretative panels throughout tell of the area prior to European arrival, its exploration by Bass and Flinders in 1798 as the first site in the north to be occupied by Lt Col. William Paterson and his contingent of soldiers and convicts, and its marine and industrial heritage. A large scale model of the town shows George Town as it was when built as the headquarters of the north, up until the 1850s. Changing displays in the exhibition room range from art and crafts to history and themes of community interest.

The George Town Watch House just one of over 60 attractions that make up the sightseeing pass known as the See Tasmania Smartvisit Card. This smartcard allows you entry and special discounted offers to this attraction and many more.
